Art does not tolerate boundaries. Meaning does not stop at the frame

– Gino Dormiendo (April 14, 1947 – January 3, 2016)

Sad news. A very dear friend, Justino “Gino” Dormiendo just passed away today. Gino was film critic, an educator, a book writer, publisher and seller, once worked for San Miguel Corporation’s corporate public relations office. We became close friends when we first met in 1986 – he was the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino [the Filipino film critics group] chair at the time on my first year as member – and I worked closely with him in preparation of that year’s Urian Awards. Although we had some disagreements during those three years of my stay with the Manunuri – he was a staunch admirer of Vilma Santos, I was a strong advocate for independent films inclusion in the Urian – these, I remember fondly, because ours was a professional relationship based on friendship as well. You will be missed, Gino. I am always grateful or your friendship. May you rest in eternal peace. (Note on the photo: Gino can be seen third from the right, on this photograph of the original members of the Manunuri.)
